Introduction

Integrating renewable energy solutions into the power grid often involves bridging different communication protocols, a major challenge for system integrators. In Vietnam, one of our partners encountered such a scenario while implementing a renewable energy solution for their customer. The entire system—including local SCADA/EMS, weather station, inverter cabinet, and string combiner box—used Modbus TCP. However, the solar farm also needed to report power quality data to the National Power Grid, which operates on the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol.

System Requirements

The customer’s infrastructure, including local SCADA, weather station, inverter cabinet, and string combiner box, communicated via Modbus TCP.To meet grid regulations, the solar farm had to report power quality data to the National Power Grid using IEC 60870-5-104.

Moxa Solution

Moxa’s MGate 5114 protocol gateway offered a reliable and efficient solution for converting Modbus TCP to IEC 60870-5-104. Its intuitive web console allowed for easy configuration and could be accessed directly through the network. The gateway also featured a built-in protocol troubleshooting tool that simplified testing and maintenance.

With end-to-end support provided by our team, the integration process was smooth and successful. The MGate 5114 enabled seamless, stable communication between the renewable energy system and the National Grid. The solution not only simplified protocol conversion but also provided strong diagnostics and ongoing support, ensuring efficient operation of the solar farm within the grid infrastructure.
