Efficient and Faster Data Acquisition

To achieve energy savings, intelligent environment control systems need access to real-time data from factory devices. An important feature of any modern energy saving system is the ability to access information in real time. However, the fact that traditional OPC servers use polling to collect data from remote devices makes it difficult to collect data as quickly as necessary. Since a single system may need to monitor thousands of devices at many remote sites, polling can greatly increase the amount of time it takes to transfer data from remote sites to the control center.

With MX-AOPC UA Server built in, Moxa’s ioLogik products improve efficiency by actively sending event data to SCADA systems and IT databases—when the events occur. Not only is active I/O extremely efficient, your event data is delivered in real time, using minimal bandwidth. This is radically different from the polling architecture used by traditional OPC servers, in which your SCADA systems poll all of your I/O devices, all of the time. Polling not only takes a big bite out of your Ethernet bandwidth, you also need to tolerate time delays, since events are reported when the device is polled, not when the event occurs.

One of the features of energy saving systems is that there could be huge numbers of I/O channels at field sites for monitoring lights, production lines, and environmental conditions, among other things. In addition, channel types for different applications could be different, and could include digital I/O, analog I/O, or temperature sensors (TC/RTD). Moreover, different I/O channels could be located at different sites within a factory, making it even harder for engineers to link remote devices to the SCADA system.

With Moxa’s ioLogik 2500, you can cascade up to 8 ioLogik E1200 modules into a versatile I/O array with more than 100 different channels. The ioLogik 2500 acts as the perfect head unit for controlling the entire I/O array, and only needs one IP address to connect the entire I/O array to your network.

Environment monitoring systems consist of many different devices that need to be monitored with different interfaces. The ioLogik 2500 is an ideal Modbus gateway since it can convert between serial interfaces (Modbus RTU) and Ethernet interfaces (Modbus TCP). In addition, the serial data (Modbus RTU) can be managed with MX-AOPC tags that can be further integrated with MX-AOPC UA server for use in an existing SCADA system.

NPort serial device servers can be used to connect some serial devices directly to an Ethernet network. For example, electricity, water, and gas meters, which provide data for billing purposes, could be connected in this way, as well as access control devices, which need to access a central database to verify that an ID swipe card is valid. By using an existing Ethernet network, serial signals from serial devices can be transferred without additional wiring effort.

An ideal energy saving system supports both centralized control and local control, in which control decisions are made independently at each remote field site location. When field site devices can play an active role in collecting data and issuing control commands, the energy consumption of the entire system can be optimized much more quickly.
