What is fiber optical and why use it?

In an simple word, using the light traveling in the fiber optical cable and transmitting the data instead of using electric traveling in the copper. As fiber optics use light as opposed to electrical signals, it is immune to electrical interface. Unlike the copper cable such as Cat 5, the fiber cable works very well in noisy environments. The other major advantage is less resistant in the signals traveling. The data can be transmitted to much further distances, up to 80 km, as oppsed to the transmission on copper cables.

Benefits of using Profibus to Fiber

  • Distance: Fiber is designed for long communication distance. It can easily break the distance limitation of 1200 meters limited by the RS-485 standard.
  • Immunity to electrostatic interference: Fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference and radio frequency interference. It provides the clean transmission in the communication path.
  • Insulation: The fiber glass eliminates the abnormal electric currents.


High reliability and low maintenance
: Fiber is also immune to temperature and moisture conditions. It does not corrode or lose signals. The nature of fiber glass is not effected by short circuits, power surges, or static electricity.

Where do you need the Profibus to Fiber?

Profibus is widely used in the DCS (Distributed Control Systems) which the system controllers are connected by networks for communication, control, and monitoring. Following is the diagram where the Profibus to Fiber can be used in the DCS.

Remote Fiber Diagnosis

The common problems that a engineer will face in a profibus application are as following.

  1. Is there any Profibus device error?
  2. Is there any profibus setting error?
  3. Is there any fiber communication abnormal?

  1. Fiber Link Monitoring: The Fiber Link Monitoring is to detect the communication errors on both sides of the fiber connection. When a communication error occurs, a red LED will turn on. If a fiber error occurs on a remote segment, the LED will flash.
  2. Remote Fiber Diagnosis: There are two major functions. The first one is to determine which side (Transmit or Receive) is causing the problem.
